Learning to Cycle in Girvan: A Dream Come True

By Lale, an Active Travel enthusiast in Girvan

Growing up in the bustling city of Istanbul, the dream of learning to cycle always felt just out of reach. With constant traffic and limited safe spaces, cycling simply wasn’t an option. Still, that desire never left me. Everything changed when I moved to Girvan in 2017. One day, along Girvan’s beautiful promenade, I discovered Biosphere Bikes. It felt like a sign. There, I met the amazing Ann, whose warmth and encouragement gave me the courage to take my first steps (or pedals!) toward learning how to ride a bike. I’ll never forget that moment. Her patience and positivity made something I once thought impossible feel exciting and achievable.

I’ve always loved being outdoors, and cycling quickly became more than just a new skill. It became a way to connect with nature, take care of my mental health, and meet new people. Most importantly, learning to ride gave me a newfound confidence as a woman and a deep sense of independence.

In 2023, I finally achieved what young me had always hoped for: I learned to ride a bike around Victory Park. It was such a joyful, empowering experience. While I was out training, I found that I was inspiring other women who hadn’t yet learned to cycle. That was such a special feeling- to be part of something bigger, just by doing something I loved.

When the time came, I didn’t hesitate- I bought the very bike I learned to ride on. It’s bright red and brings me so much joy every time I take it out. I now enjoy solo rides and local adventures with a huge smile on my face.

I truly couldn’t have done it without Biosphere Bikes and the incredible support from Ann. Their work is more than teaching people how to cycle—they help build confidence, create connections, and change lives.

So, if you’ve ever thought, “I wish I could learn to ride a bike…”- just know it’s never too late. I’m proof of that!
