Our mission is to create a community bike hub giving access to bikes and bike hire for everyone. We use these cycle-related activities as a tool to engage individuals and groups who may be disadvantaged.
Our Mission
Biosphere Bikes is a not-for-profit community bike hub based in Girvan, South Ayrshire, founded by Ann Berry through her love of cycling and passion for inclusion. We believe everyone—regardless of age, ability, or background—should have access to cycling.
Located at the Girvan seafront, our seasonal hub offers bike hire, including electric and adaptive bikes, making cycling accessible to all. We also run a Community Bike Shop where people can purchase a refurbished bike, get their bike fixed, enjoy a cup of tea, and connect with others in a welcoming space.
Through bike sales, servicing, volunteering, and training, we use cycling to address issues like poor health, social isolation, and financial barriers. We’re committed to sustainability—refurbishing used bikes to reduce waste and promote eco-friendly travel!
Named after our location in the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere, we're proud to be a Biosphere Certified Business, supporting local tourism, the environment, and our wider community.
At Biosphere Bikes, we help people explore hidden gems across South Carrick by bike—enjoying nature, heritage, and culture while reducing environmental impact.
Biosphere Bikes launched in 2018 with seed funding and partnerships; it all began with a small seafront hub and refurbished bikes.
Over time we expanded services: accessible bikes, beach wheelchairs, free loans for NHS/emergency workers, providing workshops & training.
We grew into a full community bike library and shop hub; created jobs, offered volunteer & learning opportunities.
In 2024 we acquired our premises, added accessibility improvements (ramps, toilets), new staff positions, courses & events, and gathered community input for future development.
Looking ahead: We plan on further expansion of the hub’s building and services, more sustainable mobility options and deeper community engagement.
Our Journey
Biosphere Bikes would not exist without the unwavering support of the Girvan community. From the very beginning, their generosity and kindness have been instrumental in bringing this project to life and sustaining its growth.
We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to our valued partners and supporters for their ongoing commitment and contributions.
Our Partners
Biosphere Bikes proudly partners with Cycling Without Age Scotland to offer free Trishaw rides for elderly and disabled individuals. Funded by Ayrshire LEADER, the service helps those with limited mobility enjoy the outdoors. Trained volunteer pilots ensure a safe, enjoyable experience.
Biosphere Bikes partners with Girvan Youth Trust to support skills development through the Hand-in-Hand groups. Young participants gain hands-on experience in building, teamwork, and problem-solving while contributing to our shop and community.
Biosphere Bikes supported Kyle Academy pupils with additional needs through basic and intermediate bike maintenance courses. They gained practical skills, confidence, and earned SALTIRE Volunteer Awards by helping recycle bikes.
Biosphere Bikes is proud to join the Thriving Community Multiply Project, offering courses that build numeracy skills and confidence. Designed for parents, job seekers, and everyday needs, the program supports better financial management and career opportunities through accessible, community-focused learning.
Biosphere Bikes runs a six-week bike maintenance programme for Girvan Academy pupils with additional support needs, building confidence through hands-on learning. Participants receive a certificate on completion.
Our Funders
We are grateful to all of our Funders that provide assistance so we can keep our programs running.
